Professional magician reveals the top three tricks thieves use to steal your money at cash points (and what YOU can do to stop them)
A professional magician has revealed the tricks thieves use to steal money from unsuspecting victims at cash points and the tips you can use to stop them.
Adam Keisner is an award-winning close-up magician and sleight of hand artist from London.
The magician, who has performed all over the world for the past 12 years, explained how you can stop thieves using misdirection, machine tampering and simple brute force to steal your cash.
So how can YOU protect yourself from cash point thieves?
1. Misdirection using a mobile phone
One of the techniques that professional thieves will use to rob you while you're at a cash point is misdirection using a mobile phone.
They will come up to the 'mark' - or victim - before tapping them on the shoulder and possibly asking for help with directions.
An accomplice will then come around the other side and withdraw the cash, steal the card or record other personal information.
Solution: Press cancel immediately if approached from behind.
2. Tampering with the machine
There may be a shell above the dispenser, which will contain a tiny pinhole camera.
This is able to monitor your pin number as you are inputting it into the ATM.
There may also be another shell above the card input slot containing a skimming device that is able to copy all the information from your card.
Thieves are then able to go back later using software on a computer and duplicate your card.
Solution: Always cover the keyboard when entering your pin.
3. Grab and run!
Sometimes thieves will simply grab the money from the cash point using brute force.
Typically they will do this to people who are more vulnerable, such as the elderly, people who are disabled or people who are drunk.
They will grab the money and run!
Solution: Always guard the dispenser when receiving cash.
