Chaos at Barcelona festival as huge fire breaks out on main stage, forcing 22,000 to flee

The Tomorrowland Unite Spain festival descended into chaos after a blaze started by a suspected fireworks display set fire to the main stage.

Around 22,000 festival-goers were evacuated from the event in Barcelona just hours before superstar DJ Steve was due to come on.

Dramatic footage showed people running to safety as the inferno sent black plumes of smoke billowing into the evening sky.

Thousands fled in the opposite direction as the inferno engulfed the stage and appeared to set fire to the scaffolding either side.

The fire spread in a matter of seconds, terrifying videos shared on social media suggested.

As the flames grew, the festival's emergency evacuation procedure flashed up on the stage screen.

More than 22,000 were evacuated from the event in Parc de Can Zam, which was due to continue until 3am.

One witness said the stage 'just exploded' while another said the fire 'apparently started during a fireworks display'.

Officials have yet to confirm how the fire started but there have been no reports of injuries.

The Director General of Civil Protection in Catalunya confirmed there had been no injuries.

He said a total of 22,143 festival-goers had been forced to leave the area in Santa Coloma de Gramenet.

Headliners at the festival include Afrojack - live on stage - before Armin Van Burren and Dimitri Vegas were live streamed via satellite.
