Catch me if you can, Wills! Competitive Kate prepares for a thrilling boat race against her husband - after swapping her yellow lace dress for casual stripes

It wouldn't be a royal tour without a spot of competitive sporting activity.

And today the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge showcased their friendly rivalry again, as they coxed rival boats during a river race in Heidelberg.

Following their visit to a traditional German food market, Kate made a quick change out of her yellow lace Jenny Packahm dress and wedges, slipping into a casual blue and white striped top teamed with skinny jeans and her favourite Superga trainers.

Heidelberg is Germany's oldest university city and is twinned with Cambridge in the UK, and the couple took to the River Neckar with rowers from both locations for the race.

Kate and William were both charged with sitting in the stern and steering their respective boats.

Despite Kate's best efforts, it was William's team who emerged victorious at the end of the race, although both were awarded with medals.

And Kate proved that she wasn't a sore loser, flashing a bright smile and waving to onlookers after crossing the finish line.

Prior to their boat, race the couple enjoyed a tour of a traditional market and took part in a pretzel-making session.

After a quick lesson from local apprentices, Kate and William tried their hand at rolling out the dough for the traditional snack, with the Duchess protecting her yellow Jenny Packham dress with a white apron.

But when it came to assembling the typical pretzel loop, Kate decided to step back and leave her husband do the tricky part.

Kate, 35, could be seen laughing as William grappled with the dough, placing a hand on his back as his efforts took shape, before finally rewarding him with a round of applause.
